British Science Week

Students from Saint Paul’s are taking part in British Science Week, a celebration of science, engineering, maths and technology.

Science is all around us every day and there are lots of ways we can engage and celebrate the role that science plays in all our lives. And with the backdrop of a global pandemic, now it is more important than ever that we embrace and explore it.

The theme for the 2021 British Science Week is ‘Innovating for the future’.

Before February half term students were issued a project that focused on an area of Corona virus. The judging has now taken place by the Science department, there were some incredible entries, and the winners have been selected – they will be announced next week! Each winner will receive an Amazon voucher from the STEM budget.

Every day next week a Science daily newsletter will be published, containing a year winner of the project, some Science facts, Science career of the day, a Science puzzle and riddle. There will be little treats for those that get the answers first.
Students will also receive quizzes to take home and try with their families, also within the Science newsletters are mini experiments that the students can try at home with their families and they are encouraged to take pictures to show their Science teachers.
There will be staff quizzes and puzzles running throughout the week with little treats available for getting the answers quickest.
We have also prepared two lessons for every student to receive next week, based upon David Attenborough’s, A life on our planet documentary. Every student will have the opportunity to experience the documentary which looks at our planet, climate change and what we can do to make things better. The students will be encouraged to offer ideas on opinions about the contents of the documentary.
We will link back to this on Earth Day where we will be working with Geography to encourage our students to think of positive changes they can make to help save the planet.
We have linked Science week to our Careers focus and every day will introduce different Science careers to students, we are also tying Science week into the literacy programme with a Science word of the day and the Science of words special focused in one of the daily newsletters.
